How we refurbish old plant – and give them another 20 year's life

We would all like to afford new plant, but in these trying times, an excellent investment is a Middleton refurbished baler (and conveyor). The savings to you can be up to half the cost of a new machine – and you enjoy a 12 month warranty, fully installed.

Since 1975 Middletons have constantly expanded the workshops and machinery so are well able to strip down and rebuild any balers of any make you are likely to see. Some 20,000 spares are held mainly of Presona and Scapa, but all the other well-known makes are handled (Boa, Lindemann, Bollegraaf, Harris etc).

Old or obsolete parts are replaced by machining either from drawings or the existing parts. In some cases we are able to improve on the OEM parts as we have learned where the faults are. No-one else in Europe has this consummate ability to look after the customer. Remember for the past thirty years we have "designed, machined, installed and serviced."

Our photos on the right show a typical baler brought, in this case, from Germany. It is the most popular of the Presona range known as the LP40EH2, capable of baling 4 - 6 tonnes an hour, fully automatically. It is around twenty years old, but these machines even when abused or ill-maintained, are still well capable of enjoying many more years of hard life – after it has been through our workshops.

Using our 30t overhead crane the machine is manoeuvred and stripped to the chassis. This is checked for integrity and warp. Broken and worn parts are discarded and what will be re-used is shot-blasted to the bare metal.

All wearing parts are checked against manufacturer's tolerances and if in doubt new parts are replaced or if no longer available, then new are machined or fabricated.

Naturally all fluids, seals and bearings are replaced for new. Inevitably new pumps are also installed. We now have a machine that can draw out cylinders and rams and we can even make a new ram in-house.

It is worth mentioning at this point that many of our staff – now nearly 40 on the payroll – were taken on as apprentices from local schools, and that the engineer who machines parts for your baler will possibly be the same who installs and services it. It is this continuity and shared expertise of the heavy baler sector that gives Middletons such an edge over any competition.

Here we see the inside of our lovely spray shop with a bare Presona ready to be transformed. X coats are added, starting with . . . . .

No we've not cheated: this is the very same German Presona shown above in a very sorry state. It took eight weeks to transform. New parts fitted include:
